Buying Wholesale

Pick up your copy NOW!

If you have a retail business, then more than likely you are buying wholesale products to resell for profit. You are either dealing in wholesale products or surplus products. There is a difference between the two, but if you are a retailer, you must learn how to buy wholesale correctly because if you don't, this can greatly reduce your chances of making a profit. After all, that is what you are in business for, right?

Common sense tells us that a retailer buying wholesale product purchases in quantity or in volume at discounted wholesale prices, or discounted volume pricing and then they sell each item or unit at a markup of the individual cost.

The markup is obviously at the resellers discretion and is usually not at the MSRP (Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price).

Pretty simple, right?

Well, running a successful reseller's business no matter if it's a brick and mortar store, online e-commerce store or flea market merchandise, you must understand the basic principles of offering the right products, at the right prices and at the right times.

Sound simple enough?

Unfortunately, I am constantly surprised when people fall in love with a product because it's the coolest thing they've ever seen, try to go buy it and either cannot find where to get it or basically they have no way to sell it because they haven't identified the market or they have no idea how to tap into that market.

The keys to this situation are to understand how critical it is to know how you will enter the market with a product and second, it's very important to locate the best sources for your products.

After you make these determinations, you then need to bring your product to market at the right prices and at the right time. Is your product or product line seasonal? Do you have it in limited quantities? Can you get the item in perpetual inventory and so forth?

After determining these issues, it's time to start sourcing your bulk merchandise. Even if you already have one supplier for your wholesale products, you will want to make sure you at least have a back up supplier or two. You never know if one supplier will run out of stock and if you run out of stock, you certainly can't sell something you don't have.

Sourcing Wholesale Merchandise

Before you buy wholesale products, visit a few of your local stores that carry the same or a similar item. You can also search online and view descriptions and pricing.

When you're researching the store's products, notate which brands they carry, note which items are in the clearance bin, which products seem to sell well?

Pick up the product that is the same item or similar to what you will be selling and physically handle and examine it. Note the name of the manufacturer listed on the product. Take note of the contact info for the manufacturer and any detail about the product such as item number, SKU, model, make etc.

Then give that manufacturer a call or look up online and see how you can purchase their products at a wholesale cost.

Other popular sources to research when you research or buy wholesale items are through attending trade shows or buyers' markets.

A trade show is one of the best places to buy wholesale merchandise for you to resell. Retailers, closeout buyers and merchandise wholesalers can locate many suppliers and product offers either serving the same or different markets.

To find a trade show near you, simply Google search "your industry" trade show. (Actually type in the name of the industry + trade show.)

You will need to present a resale certificate, tax ID or some form of permit, license or identification to verify that you are a legitimate wholesaler. This is because trade shows aren't open to the general public as only a wholesale reseller can obtain wholesale products and pricing.

Now that you have located your sourcing supply, now you are ready to buy products wholesale. Learn more about where to buy wholesale.

How to buy wholesale for the best prices:

When you first contact your supplier, more than likely you will not be able to demand their most rock bottom prices.

Remember, starting out with them you are developing a new relationship. To be blunt, who are you to them?

You first must establish a relationship with them. Relationships are key to business and this is no different. You will probably have to put a credit card on file with you new supplier, unless of course you are a huge business with a tremendous credit line. But if not, you'll need to make your purchases on credit card at least at the initial outset.

Tell them you want to purchase wholesale pallets of your product or product line. Then what you do is you focus on building the relationship and after a few purchases or about 90 days, you want to try to move the payment terms to at least a NET 30. The reason is you get your merchandise wholesaler or supplier to ship your products to you first and then they bill you after 30 days after you have built up trust with them.

This allows you to turn or sell your products before you are billed so in effect, if you purchase 100 red wagons and the bill comes in 30 days, you can potentially sell all of those wagons before that bill comes due.

So what has happened is you have sold the products and made the profit before you paid for them! That is the way good retailers do business and this is the way you should purchase your wholesale merchandise pallets!
